IMAT cut off 2026 for non-EU students

Non-EU candidates living abroad are not in the national ranking. Each university ranks its own non-EU applicants, and you compete only at the university where you pre-enrolled. Any score above zero is enough to be ranked, so the real cut-off is the score of the last student admitted.

Marco Polo seats in 2026/27

The Marco Polo programme is an Italian government programme for students from the People's Republic of China. Some universities reserve part of their non-EU quota for Marco Polo applicants: only these students compete for those seats, and other non-EU applicants compete for the remaining ones.

At Pavia, Marco Polo seats left unfilled are given to other non-EU applicants.

💠 Three seats in the Marco Polo program are reserved for non-EU students.

Pavia: Of the five seats reserved for Chinese students under the Marco Polo programme, three have been filled. The remaining two seats have been reassigned to other non-EU applicants, extending admission to candidates ranked up to and including 37th on the non-EU ranking list. Download the Marco Polo list

Cagliari: The two seats reserved for Chinese students under the Marco Polo programme have been reassigned to other non-EU applicants because no Marco Polo candidates applied for the programme.

IMAT cut off 2026 for EU students

EU candidates and non-EU candidates living in Italy are ranked in one national ranking. A minimum of 20 points is needed to be included. Each university's cut-off is the score of the last person assigned there, and it drops round after round as students enrol elsewhere or withdraw. That is why we track every round, not just the first.

What to expect from the IMAT cut off 2026

Nobody can calculate a 2026 cut-off from the anonymous results. They don't show who is EU or non-EU, which university each candidate chose, or who will enrol. But the data points clearly in one direction:

  • 01

Higher scores across the board. The same share of candidates needed 3 to 11 more points than in 2025 (top 10%: 69.3 vs 61.2), and in absolute places the jump is bigger: the top 2,000 needed 68.8 vs 57.4. Expect most 2026 cut-offs to be higher than 2025.

  • 02

More EU seats soften the rise for EU candidates. EU Medicine seats grew by over 250 (952 → 1,207), including new courses at Florence and Padova MedTech and new EU seats at Catania.

  • 03

Fewer non-EU seats at Catania and Marche (−20 and −10) mean fewer admissions from the same list. Messina and Parma each gain 5.

  • 04

The first list is not the final cut-off. Each scrolling round can only hold the last admitted score or lower it. In 2025, Bologna's EU Veterinary cut-off fell from 53.8 in round 1 to 34.1 by the end.

IMAT cut off 2026: frequently asked questions

01When will the IMAT 2026 cut-offs be published?

The named national ranking for EU candidates and non-EU candidates living in Italy is published on 26 October 2026. Cagliari, Padova and Marche also publish their non-EU lists on 26 October; other universities publish on their own dates. Cut-offs then fall round by round as seats are reassigned.

02What is the minimum IMAT score in 2026?

EU candidates and non-EU candidates living in Italy need at least 20 points to enter the national ranking. Non-EU candidates living abroad are ranked with any score above zero, and a paper with no answers is not ranked. The minimum only lets you into the ranking; it does not guarantee a seat.

03How many IMAT seats are there in 2026/27?

At public universities: 1,207 Medicine seats for EU candidates and 845 for non-EU candidates living abroad (525 in Italy plus 320 at Tor Vergata's Tirana course). Dentistry has 49 EU and 11 non-EU seats, and Veterinary Medicine 63 EU and 7 non-EU seats.

04Can I work out a university's cut-off from the anonymous results?

No. The anonymous lists show only answer-sheet codes and scores. They don't show whether a candidate is EU or non-EU, which universities they chose, or who will enrol. A real cut-off only appears in the official rankings.

05Will the IMAT 2026 cut-offs be higher than 2025?

Most likely, yes. The median rose from 40.6 to 51.2 and the score needed for the top 2,000 rose from 57.4 to 68.8. The extra EU seats will soften this for EU candidates, but no one can predict an exact number.

06Why does the cut-off go down after the first list?

When an admitted student doesn't enrol, or moves to a higher preference, their seat passes to the next person on the list, who has the same or a lower score. That's why the final cut-off is usually lower than the first-round one.

07Does my IMAT 2026 score count for 2027?

No. Your score is valid only for the 2026/27 admissions. To apply for 2027/28 you sit the IMAT again under the new decree.
