Federico II Medicine & Veterinary Medicine Admission 2026/2027: Guide and Deadlines

Federico II IMAT 2026 is the official admission cycle for the University of Naples Federico II's English-taught Medicine and Surgery and Veterinary Medicine single-cycle Master's degrees (LM-41 R and LM-42 R). Here's everything the two official bandi (DR/2026/3111 and DR/2026/3110, both published 10 August 2026) say about them — registration windows, test format, scoring, rankings and enrolment, decoded from the original Italian into one page.

Federico II IMAT 2026 overview

Every year, the University of Naples Federico II opens a set number of seats on two English-taught, single-cycle Master's degrees — the Italian equivalent of an integrated MD and DVM — to candidates who sit a national, MUR-set entrance test known as the IMAT. Federico II IMAT 2026 is governed by two parallel bandi (calls for applications), both signed by the Rettore facente funzioni, Prof. Angela Zampella, covering admission for the 2026/2027 academic year to:

  • Medicine and SurgeryMedicina e Chirurgia, class LM-41 R, taught entirely in English at the Scuola di Medicina e Chirurgia (DR/2026/3111, 10 August 2026)
  • Veterinary MedicineMedicina Veterinaria, class LM-42 R, taught entirely in English at the Dipartimento di Medicina Veterinaria e Produzioni Animali (DR/2026/3110, 10 August 2026)

This guide walks through both bandi in plain English: who can apply, exactly what's due and when, how the test and rankings work, and what happens after you win a seat. It's a summary of two long, dense legal documents — you can read the official bandi in full, or cross-check anything decision-critical against Federico II's own website before you act on it. For how these bandi fit the national picture, see the IMAT 2026/2027 rulebook.

Programmes & available seats

Both degrees run six years, taught entirely in English, under Italy's numero programmato (capped-place) system. Unlike some other Italian universities, Federico II's Veterinary Medicine bando covers a brand-new programme — 2026/2027 is its very first year of activation. Seats across both courses are split into two administrative categories:

Category Medicine & Surgery (LM-41 R) Veterinary Medicine (LM-42 R)
EU and non-EU candidates residing in Italy 35 18
Non-EU candidates residing abroad 45 2
Total 80 20

Both seat counts were set following urgency decrees ratified by the Senato Accademico and Consiglio di Amministrazione on 29 May 2026, based on Table B annexed to Ministerial Decree n. 1005/2026. Notably, the Medicine seat count was revised upward mid-cycle: an initial urgency decree (D.R. 1582/2026) requested 70 seats (25 + 45), before a later decree (D.R. 2792/2026, 20 July 2026) raised the total to 80 at CRUI's request. Wondering how Federico II stacks up elsewhere? See the full 2026/2027 seat breakdown for every public university, or vote on your shortlist in the IMAT university choice tracker.

Who's eligible

Eligibility is identical across both Federico II bandi and follows Article 39, paragraph 5 of Legislative Decree 286/1998 (as amended by Law 189/2002). There are three distinct paths, depending on citizenship, residency and where you obtained your diploma.

Candidates with an Italian secondary diploma

Straightforward eligibility: holders of a diploma issued in Italy by an upper-secondary school can apply directly to either programme.

EU citizens, and non-EU residents in Italy

EU citizens wherever resident, and non-EU citizens legally residing in Italy under Article 39, comma 5 of D.Lgs. 286/1998, are eligible if they hold a foreign qualification (with at least twelve years of schooling) recognised as equivalent to the Italian secondary diploma.

Non-EU candidates residing abroad

Also admitted are non-EU citizens residing abroad, holding a foreign qualification (again, at least twelve years of schooling) recognised as equivalent, following the procedures for international students' entry, stay, enrolment and qualification recognition set out by MUR for A.Y. 2026/2027 — published at studiare-in-italia.it.

Federico II IMAT 2026 deadline calendar

This is the single most important table on this page. Miss the 9 September registration cutoff, and both bandi are explicit that no exception reopens it — and the timeline below is identical for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

Heads up: both bandi state that no justification is accepted for late registration, late payment, or missed enrolment windows at any stage — not even documented delays. The bandi also warn that, between ranking rounds, candidates who are neither enrolled nor formally "rinunciatari" must actively confirm their interest in the Universitaly portal within the stated window, or they are automatically dropped from the ranking with no right of appeal on the grounds of the missed confirmation.

How to register for the test

Registering for Federico II IMAT 2026 — for either programme — happens entirely through the national Universitaly portal.

  1. 1

Register on Universitaly (www.universitaly.it), providing your email address and personal details.

  2. 2

Rank your preferred university venues in order, and declare any language certification you hold under Allegato 3 of D.M. 1005/2026. If you choose to sit the test in Italy, your first preference automatically becomes your test venue — no exceptions or deferrals are allowed. If you intend to sit abroad, you must select a foreign venue listed in Tabella A annexed to D.M. 1005/2026. These choices become irrevocable at 15:00 GMT+2 on 9 September 2026, and only the candidate's final "confirmation" before that time counts.

  3. 3

Pay the participation fee using the method published on Universitaly once registrations open. Bank transfers and post-office payments are never accepted anywhere in this procedure — only the methods listed on the relevant portal.

  4. 4

Bring both documents on test day. You'll need a valid photo ID (identity card, driving licence, passport, postal ID card, State-issued recognition card, or firearms licence) and your Universitaly registration receipt — both shown for inspection, not submitted.

Disability or DSA? Candidates with a certified disability (Law 104/1992) or a Specific Learning Disorder diagnosis (Law 170/2010) are entitled to extra time and tailored support. Submit the dedicated request form and supporting documentation by PEC to area.studenti@pec.unina.it, by the 9 September 2026, 15:00 deadline — details in Special situations below.

Test-day rules

Candidates sitting at Federico II must arrive by 11:30 at the Monte Sant'Angelo campus with a valid ID document and their Universitaly registration receipt. Room assignments are announced only on the day of the test itself. Candidates are seated in order of date of birth, with an exception for twins — and no access is granted once identification procedures have closed, regardless of the reason for arriving late.

Candidates must use only the black pen provided by the university. No personal stationery, phones, smartwatches, tablets, earbuds, webcams, books, notes, or blank paper are allowed at the desk — everything must be left in a bag on the floor beside the candidate, or wherever the room supervisor indicates. No interaction between candidates is permitted at any point.

The test will be annulled, even if discovered only after the fact, if a candidate:

  • Sits the test in an unassigned exam room without prior authorisation recorded in the room minutes
  • Brings or uses phones, smart devices, unauthorised writing tools, books, notes, or blank paper
  • Signs or marks the answer sheet in an identifiable way — the sheet must remain completely anonymous
  • Interacts with other candidates or attempts to copy or swap materials, including registry forms or answer sheets
  • Uses any pen, pencil, or writing implement while sealing the answer sheet or registry form into the collection containers

Federico II IMAT 2026 minimum scores & national ranking

To appear in either Federico II IMAT 2026 ranking at all, your final score has to clear a threshold:

  • EU and non-EU candidates legally resident in Italy: ≥ 20 points
  • Non-EU candidates residing abroad: > 0 points (and they must have answered at least one question — those who leave every question blank are excluded)

CINECA compiles the single national ranking, shared across every Italian university offering these English-taught programmes, for EU and Italy-resident non-EU candidates. A separate ranking for non-EU candidates residing abroad is compiled directly by Federico II. If two candidates tie on total score, both bandi break the tie in this order:

  1. Higher score in Biology, then Chemistry, then Physics/Maths, then Logical Reasoning, then Reading Comprehension
  2. Possession, by the registration deadline, of a recognised language certification under Allegato 3 of D.M. 1005/2026 (self-certified)
  3. Preference for candidates with a certified invalidity of 66% or higher, or disability status under Law 104/1992, Art. 3 comma 3
  4. If still tied, the younger candidate prevails

On each scorrimento, a candidate reaching their top preference is marked ASSIGNED and must enrol within the round's deadline or forfeit the seat entirely. A candidate matched to a lower preference is marked RESERVED and may either enrol immediately or wait for a better preference to open up — though enrolling automatically cancels all remaining preferences. Curious where past cut-offs landed? See our guide to what counts as a good IMAT score.

Enrolling

Enrolment (immatricolazione) is decided by your position in the merit ranking, the seats attributed to Federico II in national programming, and the preferences you expressed at registration. It's completed entirely online through segrepass1.unina.it, with slightly different steps depending on whether you're enrolling for the first time, transferring internally from another Federico II course, or transferring from another university — and, for first-time enrolees, payment must be completed by card or another accepted digital method (never bank transfer or post office).

Non-EU candidates residing abroad must instead complete enrolment in person at the relevant university office, by the deadline published alongside their specific ranking.

No upper-year transfers for 2026/2027. Both bandi state explicitly that, because the number of students already enrolled in years 2 and beyond matches the seats already allocated to Federico II in earlier programming cycles, every admitted candidate — including internal course changes and transfers from other universities — is enrolled exclusively in Year 1 of either programme this cycle. There is currently no route into an advanced year of Medicine or Veterinary Medicine at Federico II.

Being deemed "idoneo" (eligible) in this selection cycle applies only to this specific procedure — it grants no automatic right of access to the programme in future academic years. Paperwork already submitted online must additionally be printed and delivered in person, within 15 days of enrolling, to the relevant Segreteria Studenti office (see Contacts below).

Special situations & support

Disability & DSA support

Candidates with a certified invalidity or disability (Law 104/1992) are entitled to up to 50% extra time, plus any tools or aids their certification indicates. Candidates with a Specific Learning Disorder (DSA, Law 170/2010) are entitled to up to 30% extra time; in cases of certified severity, compensatory tools may be permitted, including a non-scientific calculator, a video magnifier, or a reader assigned by the university with the support of the Centro Servizi di Ateneo per l'Inclusione Attiva e Partecipata degli Studenti (S.In.A.P.S.i.). DSA diagnoses must be no more than 3 years old, or issued after the candidate's eighteenth birthday, and must come from public healthcare providers or accredited regional bodies.

Candidates may be admitted provisionally with non-updated medical certification, where delays are attributable to public health-service (SSN) limitations, with the university reserving the right to request updated documentation afterward. Candidates residing abroad need certification attesting the same condition, issued in their country of residence, accompanied by a sworn translation into Italian or English — and the condition is only recognised if it's coherent with Italian regulations.

Requests, using the template published on the university's bando page and with supporting documentation attached, must be sent by PEC to area.studenti@pec.unina.it, no later than 9 September 2026, 15:00.

Transfers and internal course changes

Students already enrolled in another Federico II course, or transferring from another university, must apply through the same procedure as any other candidate. Admission is conditional on ranking in a useful position; the Commissione di Coordinamento Didattico may separately assess and recognise any credits (CFU) earned in a prior course, but — per the "no upper-year transfers" rule above — all successful transfers still enrol in Year 1 for 2026/2027.

Federico II IMAT 2026 FAQ

The test is on 29 September 2026. Candidates sitting at the University of Naples Federico II must arrive at the Monte Sant'Angelo campus by 11:30 for identification — the test itself starts at 13:30 and lasts 100 minutes. Exact room assignments are published on the day of the test itself.

Registration runs on Universitaly from 26 August to 9 September 2026 at 15:00 GMT+2, and is irrevocable after that. You register with your email address, rank your preferred test venues in order, declare any language certifications, and pay the participation fee.

Medicine and Surgery has 80 places: 35 for EU and non-EU candidates residing in Italy, and 45 for non-EU candidates resident abroad. Veterinary Medicine has 20 places: 18 for EU and non-EU candidates residing in Italy, and 2 for non-EU candidates resident abroad.

You need a final score of at least 20 points if you're an EU or non-EU candidate legally resident in Italy, or a score above 0 if you're a non-EU candidate residing abroad. Non-EU candidates abroad who leave every question blank are not included in the ranking.

60 multiple-choice questions across reading comprehension, logical reasoning, biology, chemistry and physics/maths, completed in 100 minutes. You get +1.5 points for each correct answer, 0 for a blank, and −0.4 for each wrong answer, for a maximum of 90 points.

No. Both 2026/2027 bandi state explicitly that all admitted candidates — including internal course changes and transfers from other universities — are enrolled exclusively in the first year, since no seats are available in later years of either cohort for this cycle.

Ties are broken first by the score obtained in biology, then chemistry, then physics and maths, then logical reasoning, then reading comprehension. After that, possession of a recognised language certification is considered, then preference for candidates with a certified disability of 66% or higher, and finally the younger candidate prevails.
