Before you start working through past papers, it helps to know how the exam is weighted. In the current IMAT format, the 60 questions are split across five subject areas, and this distribution is a big part of why past papers are so useful: it shows you exactly where to spend your practice time.

Biology and Chemistry alone account for well over half of the paper, which is why students who work through every past paper — rather than just the last one or two years — tend to spot the recurring question patterns in those two subjects fastest. When to Practise Each IMAT Past Paper — A Study Timeline

Not all past papers are equally useful at every stage of your preparation. Older papers are best for learning question style without the pressure of matching current form exactly; the most recent papers are the closest simulation of what you'll actually sit. Here's a simple way to sequence the archive above:

• 12+ weeks out — foundations: work through the 2011–2016 papers untimed, one subject at a time if needed. The goal here is exposure to question phrasing and format, not speed.
• 6–10 weeks out — building speed: move to the 2017–2021 papers under loose time limits (aim for the real per-question pace, but don't panic if you go over). Start using the answer sheet above to build the habit of marking answers exam-style.
• 2–5 weeks out — full simulation: sit the 2022–2025 papers under strict, timed exam conditions, ideally in one sitting with no breaks. These are the most representative of current exam structure, so treat each one as a dress rehearsal.
• Final week — targeted review: go back through your worked solutions for any paper where you lost marks, and re-attempt just those question types rather than a full paper again.
