Historic Move: Padua Medicine to Venice
Starting 2025/2026, the University of Padua relocates its prestigious Medicine and Surgery program to the Santi Giovanni e Paolo Hospital in Venice.
In a historic step for medical education in Italy, the University of Padua has announced the relocation of its prestigious Medicine and Surgery program to the Santi Giovanni e Paolo Hospital in Venice.
Starting from the academic year 2025/2026, this change promises to enhance the quality of medical training and expand opportunities for students, both locally and globally.
Venice Welcomes Future Doctors
The transition will begin with an initial cohort of 100 students, with plans to steadily increase enrollment each year until the program accommodates 600 students by 2030. The move reflects a commitment to integrating academic learning with practical, hands-on experience.
By basing the program within a hospital setting, students will be immersed in real-world clinical scenarios from the very beginning of their studies. The program’s composition will ensure diversity and inclusivity:
- 75% of students will be from the European Union or non-EU residents already living in Italy.
- 25% of students will come from outside the EU, welcoming international perspectives to this unique academic setting.
Why Move the Program to Venice?
The relocation is driven by several strategic goals designed to modernize medical training:
Early Clinical Exposure
Students will start their practical training at Santi Giovanni e Paolo Hospital and Mestre’s Angelo Hospital, gaining direct experience with patients.
Global Reach
With the program taught entirely in English, it aims to attract international students, making Venice a global hub for medical education.
Cutting-Edge Training
The new location will offer state-of-the-art facilities, advanced simulation labs, and innovative teaching methods to provide a world-class education.
Addressing Healthcare Needs
With a growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals in Italy and Europe, this program is designed to train future doctors who can meet the region’s medical challenges.
No Changes for Current Students
Students currently enrolled in the University of Padua’s Medicine and Surgery program need not worry. The memorandum guarantees that their courses, examinations, and locations will remain unchanged until they complete their studies. This ensures a smooth transition for the university while preserving the experience of its existing students.
Student Life in Venice
To support this influx of students, the university is planning significant investments in housing. A new guesthouse and dormitory are already in the works, and partnerships with local organizations aim to create additional affordable living spaces. By 2030, Venice will boast a vibrant, student-friendly community.
For those concerned about Venice’s high cost of living, nearby cities such as Mestre and Padua offer budget-friendly alternatives with convenient commutes.
Opportunities for Future IMAT Candidates
For international students preparing for the International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT), this program represents an exceptional opportunity. Venice, with its rich history and stunning architecture, provides an inspiring backdrop for medical studies.
- Cutting-Edge Facilities: State-of-the-art labs and immersive simulations.
- Dedicated Student Hospital: Students will benefit from a hospital exclusively focused on training, ensuring access to internships and clerkships without competition from traditional Italian medicine programs.
- Global Collaboration: Learn alongside peers from around the world, fostering cultural exchange and innovation.
A Step Toward a Brighter Future
This relocation marks a significant milestone not only for the University of Padua but also for the Veneto region. By merging history, innovation, and academic excellence, Venice is set to become a leading destination for medical education.
As Venice evolves into a modern campus city, the collaboration between the University of Padua and the local healthcare system is poised to shape the next generation of medical professionals and drive innovation and excellence in healthcare for years to come.

I emailed the university to ask for more information about accommodation in Venice, but they only gave me a website for Padua.
Dear Trish,
The university likely needs more time to finalize the details, as the decision about accommodation in Venice was made recently, and further information is still being prepared.
