La Sapienza University - IMAT Preparation with LOCOMOTIVE

Sapienza University of Rome, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, offers a globally recognized Medicine and Dentistry program in English. The university attracts students from all over the world who seek high-quality medical education combined with world-class research and clinical training.
Program structure
The Medicine and Dentistry program at Sapienza is structured into a six-year course that integrates theoretical learning with practical, hands-on experience:
- Years 1-3: The first three years focus on building a strong foundation in medical sciences, including biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics. Students will gain a deep understanding of the human body, both in normal and pathological states, through lectures and lab work conducted at Sapienza’s central campus.
- Years 4-6: In the clinical years, students rotate through various specialties, such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and emergency medicine. The rotations take place in affiliated hospitals and medical centers in Rome, providing students with the opportunity to interact with patients and apply their knowledge in real medical settings.
- For Dentistry students, practical training in dental surgery and related disciplines begins early, with a focus on patient care in Sapienza’s on-campus clinics.
Admissions
- Admission to the Medicine and Dentistry program is based on the IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test). The IMAT evaluates candidates’ knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and general knowledge, and is required for all international applicants. Sapienza is one of the most sought-after universities in Italy, and IMAT scores play a crucial role in the competitive selection process.
Learning environment and facilities
Sapienza University provides students with access to excellent facilities and resources to support their medical education:
- Libraries: The university boasts a rich network of libraries, including the Biblioteca di Medicina and the Biblioteca Centrale, which house a vast collection of medical textbooks, journals, and digital resources. These libraries are equipped with modern study spaces to support students in their academic journey.
- Laboratories: Students participate in laboratory work throughout their preclinical years. These labs are outfitted with advanced technology to facilitate learning in areas like histology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacology.
- Simulation Centers: Sapienza has invested in state-of-the-art simulation centers where students practice clinical skills, such as surgical techniques and patient care, in a controlled environment before they begin working with real patients.
Language Support and Italian Proficiency
- The course is delivered in English, but students must become proficient in Italian by the third year to communicate effectively during their clinical rotations in hospitals and dental clinics. Sapienza offers Italian language courses to international students, helping them acquire the necessary language skills for interacting with patients and healthcare staff.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
- The tuition at Sapienza is determined on a sliding scale based on family income, making it accessible to a wide range of students. Fees typically range from €1,000 to €2,500 per year. Sapienza also offers various scholarships and financial aid options to assist students from lower-income backgrounds.
Clinical Training and Practical Experience
- In the clinical years, students engage in rotations at leading hospitals in Rome, including Policlinico Umberto I, one of the largest hospitals in Italy. Here, students gain invaluable experience in different medical specialties, working alongside experienced doctors in a high-demand hospital setting.
- For Dentistry students, clinical practice includes working directly with patients in Sapienza’s dental clinics, gaining hands-on experience in oral surgery, orthodontics, and prosthodontics under the supervision of skilled professionals.
Exams and Graduation
- Exams: Students are evaluated through written, oral, and practical exams throughout the program. Clinical rotations also have performance assessments based on practical skills and patient interactions.
- Thesis and Graduation: The final step in the program is the completion of a medical or dental thesis. Students must carry out original research or a comprehensive review of a medical topic, and defend their thesis before a panel of professors. Successfully defending the thesis is part of the graduation process, after which students receive their medical or dental degrees.
- After completing the program, graduates are awarded degrees in Medicine or Dentistry, which are recognized across the European Union and internationally. Upon graduation, students can apply for residency programs or pursue further specialization in their chosen fields. Graduates must also pass the Italian state exam to practice medicine or dentistry in Italy.
Student life
- Rome offers a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere for students. As Italy’s capital city, it is known for its rich history, art, culture, and incredible cuisine. Sapienza’s central location allows students to explore the cultural heritage of Rome while also benefiting from modern amenities. From cafes and restaurants to historic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Vatican, students can enjoy a unique blend of academic life and cultural immersion.
- Sapienza also provides students with numerous extracurricular activities, such as student organizations, sports, and cultural events, fostering a strong sense of community among international students.
